hi,

Generally, I try to write one relevant post every week, about sustainability and energy efficiency topics. However, if there is an interesting news article it may spark a comment.

To get the latest post delivered automatically to your mailbox - it is easy to subscribe (top right hand side of the page) or just add http://www.johnherbert.hk/feed to your RSS feed

cheers,
John Herbert

Hi John - You might be interested to know that the International Green Construction Code (IGCC) will be part of the family of International Codes that not only are adopted and enforced in the U.S., but used as models for code development around the world.

It is our desire to create a document that actually will be useable by code enforcement officials and reflect the input of architects and other stakeholders at the very beginning of our process through its completion. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has recently endorsed this initiative: http://www.iccsafe.org/news/nr/2009/0722_USGBC.pdf. Rather than playing catch up this effort builds upon the valuable work in the systems and standards arenas, and will result in a well-informed regulatory framework that addresses an important gap: no consistent and enforceable code currently exists.

The attempt to fill this gap with a variety of homegrown versions, while well intended, does not provide a useful basis for building designers, developers and other stakeholders to address green construction across jurisdictional boundaries.

Best regards,
Laura Taylor on behalf of the International Code Council

Hi John thanks for your insightful suggestions. Coming from an expert in the field, its truly helpful to the rest of us. Yes, spending the energy more efficiently is perhaps the first step towards conservation. It is also the most cost effective as you have pointed out. Hope more industries as well as individuals take this more seriously and make a positive impact.

Informative post.
